Child & Youth Services

We work together with the family

Parenting a child can sometimes be a real challenge.  Having a child with a diverse ability can sometimes make parenting even more challenging while you find ways to support your child’s diverse needs.  Building Bridges offers a variety of supports and services to children and youth with diverse abilities and their families to help them navigate these challenges a bit better.

Early Intervention for Children with Autism

Building Bridges Community Support is pleased to be able to offer early intervention services to children who live with autism spectrum disorder. Qualified Behaviour Interventionists work one-to-one with preschool-aged children to support them to develop the skills they will need to be successful in school and the community. The focus of early intervention includes: communication, social skills, daily living skills, gross and fine motor skills, behaviour support, and academic skills.

Children will have the opportunity to work one-to-one with the Interventionist and participate in group activities.

Working in conjunction with a Behavioural Consultant, Speech and Language Pathologist, Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist, the Interventionist implements the Behavioural Plan of Care for each child.

Hours of intervention are designed to meet the needs of the children and their families. This service can be funded through Autism Funding or parental funding.

Social Groups

Social groups are available for children and youth of all ages who live with autism spectrum disorder and other diverse abilities. For more information about social groups, click here.

For a schedule of social group outings, see our Community Inclusion Calendar.

Respite Support

Being a parent of a child with diverse abilities is a challenge. Self-care is an important factor in helping ensure parents are at their best to support their child/youth.

Building Bridges Community Support has a list of individuals interested in providing respite support to families. We have pre-screened these individuals to ensure they have up-to-date criminal record checks, first aid, driver’s license and driver’s abstract.  Families are still responsible for interviewing and hiring the individual recommended by Building Bridges.

Respite funding may be available through Children and Youth with Special Needs or the At Home Program. Contact your CYSN worker for further information.
