Re: Family Support worker,

Building Bridges,

My preference is to find a counselling position but I'm also open to other possible opportunities.  I recently reached out to my community for possible career opportunities that would be a good fit for my skill-set and my friend Chris Hawkins recommended that I check in with your organization.

I have recently graduated from in the Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology program at Yorkville University in New Brunswick. This career opportunity is an amazing chance for me to support other members of my community. I want to continue to develop my skills in counselling and eventually be recognized as a leading member of the mental health community.  My approach is centered in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with strong influences from Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy and the Rogerian perspective. I am particularly interested in Trauma work.

Yorkville University is recognized across Canada as a school that offers engaging content, and the graduates are recognized as having the credentials to practice in the field of counselling. The school’s mandate to offer programs that contribute to the betterment of society fits well with my values around supporting my community to become healthier. I also have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, which I received in 2005 from the University of Victoria. I enjoyed a multidisciplinary approach to my education. I was also able to learn a variety of ways to support my peers through a program called Peer Helping.

Before, entering my master’s program, I worked as a Teaching Assistant at Oak and Orca Bio-regional School for 7 years. It was the first job that I felt I was able to pour my heart into. Working as a mentor and educator was a wonderful and rewarding experience. At Oak and Orca we practised a student-centred approach in which the teachers worked one-to-one with their students in tailoring the curriculum in such a way that considered each student's specific learning styles. This experience has led me to favour the client-centred approach in my counselling approach. Throughout my studies, I have also found that I have an affinity for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

I have a deep focus on developing healthy relationships in my lifestyle. Others in my life also experience me as contributing to a healthier community. I have many skills that would be useful in the field of counselling: I am a skilled facilitator, have great communication skills, and am well acquainted with a variety of learning needs, just to name a few. I want to act as a guide in helping others address factors that will enable them to live healthier lifestyles. I would be very excited to work with Building Bridges. Thank you for your consideration. I currently live in Sooke B.C. and would love to be able to work close to home.

Sincerely,

Smiler Overton
